Venezuela: recognition of ESO and Bachillerato

Match old and current school-year names, prepare your qualification and transcripts, and check Education Zone authentication before requesting an apostille.

Check which Spanish qualification you can apply for

Equivalence depends on the studies you passed and your school's education system, not your nationality. The Andrés Bello Convention provides recognition criteria, but you must still apply and receive a Spanish decision.

Applying for ESO

Pass year 4 of Educación Secundaria, equivalent to the former first year of Educación Media Diversificada y Profesional. The former ninth year of Educación Básica or year 3 of Secundaria is not enough for ESO.

Applying for Bachillerato

In the general route: year 5 of Secundaria and the Bachiller qualification, equivalent to the former second year of Educación Media Diversificada y Profesional with the final qualification. For Técnico Medio, check the completed curriculum and final qualification allowing higher-education access.

Prepare your academic documents

Request official certificates showing each school year, subjects, grades and academic dates. Check that your identity matches throughout; ask for missing pages or corrections before getting an apostille.

  • For ESO: transcripts for years 1, 2, 3 and 4 of Secundaria; under the former names, years 7, 8 and 9 of Educación Básica and year 1 of Media Diversificada y Profesional.
  • For Bachiller in Murcia: the official qualification and at least the final three school years. In the current general route, prepare years 3, 4 and 5 of Secundaria; under the former system, year 9 of Básica and years 1 and 2 of Media Diversificada.
  • The Generalitat country page lists two final years for Bachiller. This guide follows the Ministry's and Murcia's general three-year minimum to avoid an incomplete application. For longer technical routes, gather the actual final three years and ask for confirmation of equivalence.
  • Request certified transcripts and the qualification from your school or the education authority holding the records. Include earlier Spanish studies where applicable; submit apostilled originals for authenticated copying.

Authenticate and apostille your documents

Check prior document authentication with your school and the state's Education Zone. The consular Bachiller example identifies the Education Zone director as the signatory; copying another official's name from the qualification can cause errors.

  • Check the qualification, date, identity, number and signatory. The official SLAE example places Bachiller under “Educación / Educación Básica”; the university GTU route covers different documents.
  • Register documents in the Sistema de Legalización y Apostilla Electrónica and follow the allocated appointment. If using a Venezuelan consular office in Spain, check its jurisdiction and instructions; Madrid requires previously authenticated originals and proof of identity.
  • The SAREN digitalisation announced in June 2026 covers documents within its remit. It does not make every school qualification and transcript eligible for a fully online process. Confirm the applicable channel for each document before paying.

Check whether translation is needed

If your qualification, transcripts and certificates are entirely in Spanish, they do not need translating merely because they were issued abroad.

  • If a document or relevant annotation is in another language, provide an official Spanish translation through a route accepted by the Ministry. The main guide explains the options.
  • Keep the document, apostille and any complete translation together. Your own translation or an automatic translation does not replace an official one.

Calculate the costs before paying

Separate the Spanish application fee from certificate, apostille and delivery costs. Costs in the issuing country depend on the stated channel and may change; check the official payment amount before paying.

  • Spain: ESO recognition has no application fee; the published Bachiller fee is €49.76 under fee 079, form 790. Check the current form and keep the payment receipt.
  • Venezuela's Consulate in Madrid publishes €60 per document handled through SLAE, with an exemption for children's and adolescents' documents. Check the office you choose; this is not a universal domestic Venezuelan price.
  • No current nationwide school-document authentication and apostille price has been verified for Venezuela. Do not use petro or bolívar amounts in notices dated 2021 as current prices; check the tariff when arranging the appointment.

Submit your application from Murcia

Continue with the main guide, “Recognition of ESO and Bachillerato”, for the official portal, payment and registration channels. Murcia's instructions distinguish preparing the form from officially submitting the application.

  • Complete the Ministry's online form, then download, sign and register it with your documents. Saving a form online is not proof of submission. An official registry can make authenticated copies from the originals.
  • A passport can prove your identity: you do not need to obtain a NIE just for this procedure. Provide proof of authority if someone represents you. Keep the registration receipt and respond to notifications and requests.
  • If you need to enrol while waiting, check the conditional enrolment slip and the education provider's conditions. The slip is not a favourable recognition decision and does not guarantee a place.

Avoid mistakes before submitting

The processing authority may request more evidence if equivalence is unclear. Before paying for additional documents, explain the school year, dates, study route and purpose of your application.

  • For the general eleven-year route, official guidance does not provide separate recognition of the first year of Spanish Bachillerato. Do not choose that process because a certificate says “first year of media”.
  • An apostille authenticates the official's signature; it does not grant Spanish recognition. If you cannot obtain a document, ask Alta Inspección which official alternative is acceptable for your case before paying for substitutes.
  • For older curricula, adult education, examination-based qualifications or schools following another education system, ask for confirmation using your documents. Do not infer equivalence from the qualification's name alone.
