Peru: recognition of ESO and Bachillerato
Use the official secondary-school certificate, distinguish SIAGIE documents from older formats and check the apostille exemption for Peruvian citizens.
Check which Spanish qualification you can apply for
Equivalence depends on the studies you passed and your school's education system, not your nationality. The Andrés Bello Convention provides recognition criteria, but you must still apply and receive a Spanish decision.
Applying for ESO
Pass grade 4 of Educación Secundaria, documenting secondary grades 1, 2, 3 and 4. Completing grade 3 alone is not equivalent to the Spanish ESO qualification.
Applying for Bachillerato
Complete grade 5 of Educación Secundaria and obtain official certification that the stage is complete. Spain requires the school-level Certificado de Estudios; a Peruvian university Bachiller degree is not required.
Sources and verification
Prepare your academic documents
Request official certificates showing each school year, subjects, grades and academic dates. Check that your identity matches throughout; ask for missing pages or corrections before getting an apostille.
- For ESO: the official Educación Básica Regular secondary certificate showing passed grades 1, 2, 3 and 4.
- For Bachiller: an official certificate showing passed secondary grades 3, 4 and 5 and completion of the stage. Check that it lists every subject and final grade.
- Request the certificate from your school or through “Mi Certificado” if your school offers the service. For closed schools or old studies, ask which authority holds the records. Do not replace the required official certificate with a Constancia de Logros de Aprendizaje without confirmation. The portal may require a security check; if you cannot access it, request the certificate from your school.
- Include earlier Spanish studies, if any. Check verification codes, the official's signature and all pages; keep original electronic files as well as printed copies.
Authenticate and apostille your documents
The usual sequence is the school certificate, MINEDU legalisation and the Foreign Ministry apostille. Prior educational endorsement depends on the format: MINEDU's current guidance says SIAGIE-issued certificates do not need this prior endorsement.
- If the certificate was not issued through SIAGIE, confirm the competent education authority's endorsement requirements. The official chain identifies UGEL and MINEDU for traditional yellow certificates. Do not automatically apply old-format instructions to a new document.
- Submit the application or FUT and document to MINEDU. If another person acts for you, the guidance requires a simple authorisation letter stating your DNI. SIAGIE certificates can also be processed through the Minedu en Línea virtual registry, according to the official announcement.
- After education authentication, request the MRE apostille. The digital route requires a PDF electronically signed by a registered official and a verification method; documents signed by hand use in-person service. Peruvian consulates abroad do not issue apostilles for Peruvian public documents.
Check whether translation is needed
If your qualification, transcripts and certificates are entirely in Spanish, they do not need translating merely because they were issued abroad.
- If a document or relevant annotation is in another language, provide an official Spanish translation through a route accepted by the Ministry. The main guide explains the options.
- Keep the document, apostille and any complete translation together. Your own translation or an automatic translation does not replace an official one.
Calculate the costs before paying
Separate the Spanish application fee from certificate, apostille and delivery costs. Costs in the issuing country depend on the stated channel and may change; check the official payment amount before paying.
- Spain: ESO recognition has no application fee; the published Bachiller fee is €49.76 under fee 079, form 790. Check the current form and keep the payment receipt.
- The MRE states that apostilles are free for Educación Básica Regular certificates signed by MINEDU and issued to Peruvian citizens. Prove your citizenship and check eligibility for this exemption before paying.
- Where the exemption does not apply, the MRE publishes general fees of 31 soles in person and 18 soles digitally. Issuance, endorsement and delivery may cost extra; no single price for all schools or UGEL offices has been verified.
Submit your application from Murcia
Continue with the main guide, “Recognition of ESO and Bachillerato”, for the official portal, payment and registration channels. Murcia's instructions distinguish preparing the form from officially submitting the application.
- Complete the Ministry's online form, then download, sign and register it with your documents. Saving a form online is not proof of submission. An official registry can make authenticated copies from the originals.
- A passport can prove your identity: you do not need to obtain a NIE just for this procedure. Provide proof of authority if someone represents you. Keep the registration receipt and respond to notifications and requests.
- If you need to enrol while waiting, check the conditional enrolment slip and the education provider's conditions. The slip is not a favourable recognition decision and does not guarantee a place.
Avoid mistakes before submitting
The processing authority may request more evidence if equivalence is unclear. Before paying for additional documents, explain the school year, dates, study route and purpose of your application.
- One official authentication-chain PDF recommends an UGEL signature for documents going to Spain, while MINEDU expressly exempts SIAGIE certificates from prior endorsement. If instructions conflict, check the format with MINEDU rather than paying for an extra endorsement by default.
- Peru's ordinary system has eleven school years and the official country guide does not provide separate recognition of the first year of Spanish Bachillerato. For Educación Básica Alternativa or other study routes, confirm equivalence using the actual academic record.
- For older curricula, adult education, examination-based qualifications or schools following another education system, ask for confirmation using your documents. Do not infer equivalence from the qualification's name alone.
