Ecuador: recognition of ESO and Bachillerato
Check which EGB and Bachillerato years your application needs, authenticate the documents through Education and choose the apostille channel suitable for each document.
Check which Spanish qualification you can apply for
Equivalence depends on the studies you passed and your school's education system, not your nationality. The Andrés Bello Convention provides recognition criteria, but you must still apply and receive a Spanish decision.
Applying for ESO
Pass year 1 of Bachillerato or Educación Media. Year 10 of Educación General Básica corresponds to year 3 of ESO: completing EGB alone is not enough for recognition as the Spanish ESO qualification.
Applying for Bachillerato
Pass year 3 of Bachillerato or Educación Media and hold the official Bachiller qualification. Check Bachiller en Ciencias or Técnico against the curriculum and final qualification; the name does not automatically confer a Spanish vocational qualification.

Prepare your academic documents
Request official certificates showing each school year, subjects, grades and academic dates. Check that your identity matches throughout; ask for missing pages or corrections before getting an apostille.
- For ESO: transcripts for EGB or Educación Básica years 8, 9 and 10, plus year 1 of Bachillerato. Older curricula may use different names; identify them using the official equivalence table and full academic record.
- For Bachiller: the qualification and transcripts for Bachillerato years 1, 2 and 3. Older documents may identify them as the three years of Ciclo Diversificado; ask for certificates clearly identifying the dates and completion.
- Request certificates from the school and check the qualification, graduation record and promotion or grade certificates as applicable. A title-register lookup alone does not document every required year's subjects and grades.
- Include Spanish academic records if part of your schooling took place in Spain. Prepare authenticated, apostilled originals for copying at the registry; check reverse sides and annexes too.
Authenticate and apostille your documents
School documents from public and private institutions need certification from the Education Ministry's district corresponding to the school before an apostille. This is different from recognising foreign qualifications within Ecuador.
- Find your school's education district and ask how to authenticate the qualification and academic certificates. School documents are handled by Education; SENESCYT concerns higher education.
- After prior authentication, request the Foreign Ministry apostille through a zonal office in Ecuador or an Ecuadorian consular office offering the service. The national guidance requires identity documents and the original document.
- The electronic apostille portal accepts specified documents and institutions using electronic signatures. Scanning a school qualification does not automatically make it eligible for a digital procedure. For consular service, check appointments and requirements; Valencia requires one booking per document.
Check whether translation is needed
If your qualification, transcripts and certificates are entirely in Spanish, they do not need translating merely because they were issued abroad.
- If a document or relevant annotation is in another language, provide an official Spanish translation through a route accepted by the Ministry. The main guide explains the options.
- Keep the document, apostille and any complete translation together. Your own translation or an automatic translation does not replace an official one.
Calculate the costs before paying
Separate the Spanish application fee from certificate, apostille and delivery costs. Costs in the issuing country depend on the stated channel and may change; check the official payment amount before paying.
- Spain: ESO recognition has no application fee; the published Bachiller fee is €49.76 under fee 079, form 790. Check the current form and keep the payment receipt.
- The Foreign Ministry publishes USD 30 per apostille in Ecuador, without VAT. It lists a 50% reduction for older people and full exemption for holders with a disability of at least 30%; provide evidence and confirm the applicable conditions.
- In Spain, Ecuador's Consulate in Valencia publishes €30 per document. Check the office you will use. Education authentication, issuance and delivery are separate costs; do not add USD 30 and €30 as if both apostilles were compulsory.
Submit your application from Murcia
Continue with the main guide, “Recognition of ESO and Bachillerato”, for the official portal, payment and registration channels. Murcia's instructions distinguish preparing the form from officially submitting the application.
- Complete the Ministry's online form, then download, sign and register it with your documents. Saving a form online is not proof of submission. An official registry can make authenticated copies from the originals.
- A passport can prove your identity: you do not need to obtain a NIE just for this procedure. Provide proof of authority if someone represents you. Keep the registration receipt and respond to notifications and requests.
- If you need to enrol while waiting, check the conditional enrolment slip and the education provider's conditions. The slip is not a favourable recognition decision and does not guarantee a place.
Avoid mistakes before submitting
The processing authority may request more evidence if equivalence is unclear. Before paying for additional documents, explain the school year, dates, study route and purpose of your application.
- Prior education authentication, the Foreign Ministry apostille and Spanish recognition are separate steps handled by different authorities. An apostilled qualification is not yet a Spanish recognition credential.
- If you have only passed Ecuadorian Bachillerato year 2 and want to continue studying, recognition of the first year of Spanish Bachillerato may be the appropriate separate process. This guide focuses on full ESO or Bachiller qualifications.
- For older curricula, adult education, examination-based qualifications or schools following another education system, ask for confirmation using your documents. Do not infer equivalence from the qualification's name alone.
